Belmonte

Vila portuguesa localizada na região Centro (Cova da Beira) no Distrito de Castelo Branco. O município é demarcado a norte pela Guarda, a leste pelo Sabugal, a sueste pelo Fundão e a oeste pela Covilhã.

A história da vila remonta ao século XII, altura em que D. Sancho I (1199) lhe atribui a Carta de Foral, ou simplesmente Foral ("documento utilizado durante o império colonial que visava estabelecer um Concelho e regular sua administração, limites e privilégios”). Juntamente com os castelos da Sortelha e Vila do Touro formava a linha defensiva do Alto Côa até à assinatura do Tratado de Alcanices (“…assinado entre os soberanos de Leão e Castela, Fernando IV (1295-1312), e de Portugal, D. Dinis (1279-1325), a 12 de Setembro de 1297. Por ele, se restabelecia a paz fixando-se os limites fronteiriços entre os dois reinos”). O Castelo de Belmonte foi sendo melhorado ao longo dos reinados de D. Afonso III, D. Dinis e D. João I.

Belmonte

Portuguese town located in the centre in the district of Castelo Branco. The municipality is bounded on the north by Guarda, on the east by Sabugal, on the southeast by Fundão and on the west by Covilhã.

The village history dates back to the twelfth century when the King Sancho I (1199) assigns the charter ("document used during the colonial empire which establishes a regular County and its administration, limits and privileges"). Together with the castles of Sortelha and Vila do Touro formed the defensive line of the High Côa until the signing of the Alcanices Treaty ("... signed between the sovereigns of Leão and Castela, Fernando IV (1295-1312), and Portugal, D. Dinis (1279-1325), on 12th of September 1297, to restore peace between the two kingdoms "). Belmonte Castle has been improved over the reins of Kings Afonso III, D. Dinis and D. João I.
